Arcanus stepped through the door—and stumbled to a halt. The chamber beyond hummed with energy, and at the very center floated a slender blade, suspended in midair.
The Sword.
It pulsed with the breath of forgotten words, the weight of oaths sworn and broken, the raw power of language itself. Arcanus’ pulse hammered in his throat, but before he could reach for the Hallow, a tingle ran along the back of his neck.
He wasn’t alone.
Slowly, he turned—and saw…you.
Yes, you, dear reader, peering through the frame of a glowing screen.
Arcanus’ eyes widened, jaw slack with shock. Can you blame him? After all, it’s not every day a stranger peers through the seams of reality itself.
For a moment, the two of you stare at one another—Arcanus and you, the one leaning a little closer now, wondering just how much of this is dream…and how much is destiny.
Then Arcanus straightens, curiosity overtaking his shock, a faint grin curling at the edges of his mouth.
“Well…something tells me this message is meant just as much for you.” He stoops to pick up a dusty book you hadn’t noticed lying on the floor, gesturing for you to come closer. “Shall we read it together?”
Stamped in faded gold on the cover, the title reads: Zell Knox’s Book of Shadows.
“Zell Knox…” he murmurs, turning the book over in his hands. “Now, why does that name sound so familiar?”
And then, together, you begin to read…

Your every word shapes your world. Speak with intention.
The thing about spells is that they often work whether you mean them to or not, something I’ve learned the hard way!
Most of us cast dozens a day—those little phrases repeated under our breath, those muttered thoughts when we’re not thinking.
I’m terrible with money.
There’s never enough time.
That’s impossible.
Spells, one and all.
The difference between the novice and the true magician is intention.
What is a spell?
A spell is a focused act of Will, aligning thought, word, and action to shape reality.
But how does intention translate into change? After many years of trial and error (and some spectacularly unanticipated results), I’ve come to believe magic works along one of four pathways—perhaps all at once, even.
1️⃣ The Psychological – A spell imprints a clear intention into the subconscious mind, which then influences our thoughts, behaviors, and opportunities in alignment with the goal. Refer back to the unconscious spells above—self-fulfilling prophecies are nothing to be trifled with!
2️⃣ The Energetic – Words, like all things, carry vibration (see notes on kotodama, below). A spell directs energy at a specific outcome, creating subtle but tangible shifts in the unseen forces surrounding us. The right word, spoken at the right time, is a skeleton key to a secret door.
3️⃣ The Spirit World – Many traditions believe spells evoke spirits, ancestors, or divine forces to assist in manifesting the intended result. All the more reason to cast a magic circle before your spellwork to keep unintended guests from meddling in your magical affairs!
4️⃣ The Quantum – Some practitioners compare magic to quantum mechanics, suggesting that focused intention influences probabilities, collapsing all possible timelines to the one you desire. (I’ll admit, this one makes my head hurt, but I suspect there’s a great deal of truth to it.)
Regardless of the model, this I know: A spell works because it aligns desire, intention, and action. This trifecta is like a magnet, or perhaps more like a blueprint, that shapes reality in accordance with your Will.

How to Craft an Effective Spell Intention
The trick to crafting a strong spell intention is to be as clear as day. Magic will always choose the path of least resistance—so give it a path to follow.
1️⃣ Make It Present & Active – Instead of “I will attract financial security,” which traps you in a state of waiting for this “I will” future, forever on the horizon, say “My income is steady, abundant, and secure.” The latter spell begins the moment you speak it.
2️⃣ Keep It Concise – If your intention is too tangled, the magic gets lost in the knots. Think of a spell like an arrow—it needs a clear target. A direct phrase like “I speak with confidence and wisdom” carries more oomph than a meandering wish.
3️⃣ Frame It Positively – If you cast a spell saying “I won’t be afraid to speak,” you’re merely telling the magic where not to go. Instead, give it a crystal clear target: “I speak with confidence and wisdom.”
4️⃣ Feel It as True – Words without belief are easily scattered, like leaves in the wind. Speak your intention aloud, with gusto. Let it settle into your marrow; feel your being shifting to embody this new state of being.
A well-crafted spell is a conversation between you and the Unseen. Make sure you’re speaking clearly.

Notes:
In many traditions, the act of speaking or writing something is not just communication—it is an act of creation.
The Japanese concept of kotodama refers to the “spirit of words,” the belief that language itself shapes reality. The Norse practiced galdr, chanted spells that wove magic into the air. The Egyptians called it heka, the divine speech that maintained the balance of the cosmos.
Across cultures and time, one truth remains: words weave worlds into being.
What world will you speak into existence?
To help me speak with intention and purpose, not wasting my precious energy on flippant speech or errant self-fulfilling prophecies, I’ve crafted a very special sigil.
